About artist

The traditional Irish group Altan without doubt belongs to the Irish musical gems. The group is named after a deep and mysterious lake in the Irish Donegal County. During the thirty years of playing together they have created a distinctive style, for which contagious energy and Irish rhythmicity are characteristic and which together with the fragile beauty of traditional songs played on violin, pipes, guitars, accordion and buzuki and sung in Gaelic and English have impressed audiences around the world. The Irish Government decided to issue a postage stamp in their honour. The band has performed and recorded with stars such as Dolly Parton, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Ricky Skaggs, and has played in important concert halls around the world including Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and Grand Ole Opry. Founding member, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the lead singer and fiddle player in Altan, was awarded Traditional Musician of the Year in a televised ceremony, the highest honour a traditional musician can receive.
